👟 Allbirds Just Ditched Shoes for GPUs and the Stock Went Up 600%

Allbirds announced a $50M financing deal this week to reinvent itself as an AI compute infrastructure company, renaming to NewBird AI and pivoting from sustainable footwear to GPU rentals almost overnight.

The Shift:

How It Got Here - Allbirds sold its brand and footwear assets to American Exchange Group for $39M in March, a brutal fall from its $4B IPO peak in 2021. With the brand gone, the company needed a new reason to exist.

What the $50M Actually Buys - The financing facility will fund GPU purchases to launch a GPU-as-a-Service business, renting out AI compute to enterprises under long-term contracts. The long-term vision is to become a fully integrated AI-native cloud solutions provider.

What Happened to the Stock - The announcement sent shares from $3 to over $20, a 600%+ spike on a company whose market cap sat at just $22M the day before. The market clearly has an appetite for anything with GPU in the pitch deck right now.

What Shareholders Are Voting On - A Special Meeting on May 18th will ask shareholders to approve the financing facility, the name change to NewBird AI, and the removal of Allbirds' public benefit status, formally ending its sustainable footwear mission for good.

The pivot is bold, but the underlying market logic is real, GPU procurement lead times are rising, data center vacancy is at historic lows, and compute capacity through mid-2026 is already fully committed. Whether a gutted shoe company can actually execute on this is a very different question.

👀 How to Turn a Single Image Into an Explorable 3D World With Nvidia Lyra 2.0

One photo in. A navigable 3D environment out. Here's how to run it.

Step 1: Download the model from Hugging Face - Head to huggingface.co/nvidia/Lyra-2.0 and pull the model. 100% open source under Apache 2.0.

Step 2: Clone the UI from GitHub - Grab the interactive GUI code from the Nvidia Lyra GitHub repo. This is what lets you navigate the generated world in real time.

Step 3: Upload your input image - Drop in any single image. Lyra 2.0 uses it as the starting frame to generate the surrounding environment.

Step 4: Define your camera trajectory - Use the interactive explorer to plan where you want to move, forward, sideways, revisiting areas. Lyra generates new regions as you go while keeping previously explored areas consistent.

Step 5: Reconstruct into 3D - The generated video gets lifted into 3D Gaussian Splats and surface meshes automatically, ready for real-time rendering or simulation.

Step 6: Export to a physics engine - Drop the scene directly into NVIDIA Isaac Sim or any compatible engine. Walk through it, navigate a robot through it, or use it as simulation training data.

🤖 Google and Anthropic Both Updated Their AI Tools This Week

Chrome picked up a new feature called Skills while Claude Code got routines and a redesigned desktop, here is what each update actually does.

Chrome Gets AI Shortcuts Called Skills

Google rolled out Skills for Gemini in Chrome, letting users save favorite AI prompts as one-click workflows instead of retyping them every time. Scanning documents, calculating calories, or any repeated task can now be saved and triggered with a single click.

Google also launched a ready-to-use Skills library for common tasks. To access it, click Ask Gemini in the top-right corner of Chrome, then type a forward slash. Watch it here.

Claude Code Gets Routines and a New Desktop

Anthropic rolled out two updates to Claude Code this week. Routines let users configure a workflow once and run it automatically on a schedule. The redesigned desktop app now supports multiple sessions running side-by-side, managed from a new customizable sidebar.

The Claude Code desktop redesign has reached 5,500,000 views since launch, suggesting strong developer interest in where Anthropic is taking its coding tool. See the design here.

Both updates point in the same direction, less manual setup, more automated execution. Google is bringing that to the browser, Anthropic is bringing it to the dev environment.
