📱 Amazon Tries Another Phone, and Bezos Wants $100B to Buy Factories

Amazon is reportedly building a new Alexa-focused smartphone over a decade after the Fire Phone flopped. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos is raising a massive fund to acquire and automate industrial companies with AI.

The Shift:

Amazon's New Phone Is Codenamed Transformer - It's being built inside Amazon's ZeroOne group, led by J Allard, who previously worked on Xbox and Zune at Microsoft. The team is exploring both smartphone and minimalist dumbphone designs inspired by the app-free Light Phone.

Alexa Leads but Won't Run the OS - Alexa won't necessarily be the operating system. The phone may rely on mini apps similar to ChatGPT instead of a traditional app store, sidestepping the app availability problem that killed the Fire Phone in 2015.

Bezos Wants $100B to Buy and Automate Factories - His AI startup Project Prometheus launched with $6.2B and focuses on AI for manufacturing and engineering. The new fund would acquire companies in aerospace, chipmaking, and defense, then modernize them using Prometheus models.

Bezos Is Already Fundraising Globally - He recently traveled to Singapore and the Middle East to raise capital. The plan is to buy legacy industrial firms and rebuild their operations with AI from the ground up.

Amazon is taking another shot at hardware with AI as the hook instead of an app ecosystem. Bezos is betting even bigger that AI can transform physical industries, not just software. No timelines on either, but the ambition is hard to ignore.

🚀 Musk Unveils Terafab to Build Chips for Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI

Elon Musk announced Terafab, a new chip manufacturing facility in Austin that would serve Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. The goal: produce a terawatt of AI compute per year, roughly 50x what the entire world outputs today.

The Shift:

1. Why Build It at All - Musk says chipmakers aren't producing fast enough for his AI and robotics needs. His words: either build Terafab or don't have the chips. The facility would handle logic, memory, packaging, and testing under one roof.

2. Two Chip Types Are Planned - One is designed for Tesla vehicles and Optimus robots. The other is a space-grade chip for solar-powered AI satellites launched via Starship. Musk expects space-based compute to undercut ground costs within 2-3 years.

3. The Vision Is Massive - Musk called it the most epic chip building exercise in history and framed it as the first step toward galactic civilization. He gave no timeline, which tracks with his pattern of ambitious announcements without firm delivery dates.

The vertical integration pitch is real, and the chip shortage pressure is real. But Bloomberg noted Musk has a history of overpromising. Worth watching as a signal of where AI infrastructure ambition is heading, not as something to plan around yet.
