🔬 Google DeepMind Just Built an AI Research Partner for Mathematicians

Google DeepMind published a paper this week on AI Co-Mathematician, a Gemini-based agentic system that helps mathematicians tackle unsolved problems, scoring 48% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and more than doubling Gemini 3.1 Pro's raw score.

The Shift:

It Works Like a Research Team - A coordinator agent breaks problems into parallel workstreams covering literature review, proof attempts, and code experiments. Crucially, it keeps failed attempts rather than discarding them, giving mathematicians a full record of what has been tried.

The Benchmark Numbers Are Significant - AI Co-Mathematician scored 87% on an internal research-level math benchmark versus 57% for Gemini 3.1 Pro. On FrontierMath Tier 4, it hit 48%, more than double Gemini 3.1 Pro's 19%.

Real Mathematicians Are Already Using It - Oxford's Marc Lackenby spotted a clever strategy inside a rejected output and resolved an open Kourovka Notebook problem. Rezchikov moved past a dead-end approach that could have cost him a week of work.

Human Steering Still Matters –  Lackenby said the system works best when the user already knows the area. The paper also flags hallucinated reasoning and polished LaTeX outputs that can look more rigorous than they actually are.

Currently in limited release, Google is aiming for broader access. The tool does not replace mathematical expertise; it rewards it. As Bérczi put it, how mathematicians use these models will make all the difference.
