3. AI Security Devices & Competitive Play - Apple is developing battery-powered AI cameras (J450) with facial recognition, infrared sensors, and automation features like dimming lights or playing music. Prototypes include a facial recognition doorbell and multiple camera formats.

🚀 Igor Babuschkin Exits xAI, Launches AI Safety VC

Igor Babuschkin, co-founder of Elon Musk’s xAI, is leaving the company to start Babuschkin Ventures, a VC firm focused on AI safety and humanity-advancing technologies. The move also comes after xAI faced multiple controversies surrounding its AI chatbot Grok.

The Shift:

1. Building xAI From the Ground Up - Babuschkin co-founded xAI in 2023 after stints at DeepMind (AlphaStar) and OpenAI, sharing with Musk a mission to build AI for humanity’s benefit. He led engineering for infrastructure, product, and applied AI. His team achieved the “impossible,” building the Memphis supercluster in just 120 days to power frontier AI models.

2. Achievements and Controversies -  xAI’s models achieved benchmark parity with OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, impressing the AI community with speed and technical execution. However, Grok faced scandals, from echoing Musk’s personal opinions on sensitive topics to producing antisemitic outputs and explicit AI-generated videos of public figures. 

3. Launching Babuschkin Ventures -  Inspired by a conversation with Max Tegmark of the Future of Life Institute, Babuschkin is shifting focus to AI safety and ambitious scientific challenges. His new VC will fund startups working on safe, agentic AI capable of tackling problems like quantum gravity or the Riemann hypothesis. 

This marks a high-profile talent shift in the AI race, with Babuschkin moving from building frontier models at record speed to funding the next wave of safe, transformative AI.
