⚖️ AI Training Just Got a Landmark Ruling, And a Legal Warning
A federal judge just gave AI companies the green light to train on copyrighted books, if they’re legally obtained. In the Anthropic case, the court ruled that while using books for training is fair use, pirating those books first definitely isn’t. The ruling splits AI legality into two clear issues: how you get the data and what your AI outputs.
The Shift:
1. Training is protected, but sourcing matters - The judge ruled that teaching AI with copyrighted books is legally “transformative,” just like a human reading to learn. But that only holds if the outputs aren’t direct copies. Anthropic passed that test, barely.
2. Library Genesis was the smoking gun - Anthropic sourced training data from sites like Library Genesis, known for pirated books. The court called this out as straight-up theft, and there’s no “AI exception” to copyright law. Now they face a massive damages trial, potentially in the billions.
3. It spells trouble for the whole AI industry - Image generators like MidJourney (under fire from Disney and Universal) look far less protected. OpenAI is also in hot water, with The New York Times claiming ChatGPT regurgitates articles verbatim. The next court date? June 26th.
This ruling sets a clear precedent: training = legal, stealing = not. Any AI model built on pirated data could be forced to pay up, restructure, or shut down. Startups will need deep pockets, or clean data pipelines, to survive what’s coming.
🎯 Turn Static Ads into Reels in Seconds (No Editor Needed)
Stop letting your best static ads collect dust.
With Midjourney’s V1 Video, you can animate top-performing creatives in under 2 minutes, perfect for Reels, no editing skills required.
How to do it:
1️⃣ Drop your static image into Midjourney via Discord
2️⃣ Add a motion prompt like “product rotates 360°” or “text fades in.”
3️⃣ Use --motion low for subtle, --motion high for dynamic
4️⃣ Export in 9:16, ready for Reels or Stories
💡 Why it works: Reels = net new reach. You scale video content fast and cut Meta CPA, using ads that already work.
🧠 OpenAI Is Quietly Assembling Its Own Google Workspace
OpenAI is reportedly building a full productivity ecosystem inside ChatGPT, not just features, but foundational tools. It’s shaping up to challenge the biggest names in workplace software.
The Shift:
1. Real-time collaboration tools are coming - OpenAI has developed but not yet released live multi-user chat and document co-editing, mirroring key functions of Google Docs and Office 365.
2. File workflows and connectors already exist - ChatGPT can now transcribe audio, upload files, and pull data from services like Teams, Drive, and Dropbox. Users are already testing this in the new Canvas interface.
3. OpenAI is building more than just software - Beyond workspace tools, it’s exploring a native browser, a content feed, and even its own AI-powered hardware device.
Microsoft owns 49% of OpenAI’s for-profit arm, but this new push steps on its core business. With restructuring talks ongoing, a productivity suite from OpenAI could shift the power balance. And $600M in 2024 enterprise revenue says it’s working.
