OpenAI has launched global group chats inside ChatGPT for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. The feature allows up to 20 people to join a shared conversation with ChatGPT contributing when needed. It moves ChatGPT from a one-on-one assistant to a collaborative space for planning, creating, and coordinating.

The Shift:

1. How Group Chats Work - Users tap the people icon to start a group chat, which copies an existing conversation into a new shared thread. Participants can join through a link and must set a name, username, and photo for clarity in the chat. Adding someone to an existing chat always creates a new conversation, so the original stays untouched.

2. ChatGPT’s Behavior in Groups - ChatGPT is trained to follow the flow of the conversation and speak only when appropriate. Users can tag “ChatGPT” to force a response if needed. The assistant can react with emojis and reference profile photos when generating personalized messages or images. 

3. Controls and Privacy - Settings allow users to add or remove people, mute notifications, and give custom instructions to ChatGPT. Personal memories do not carry into group chats and ChatGPT will not create memories from group conversations. Each user’s private preferences and memory settings remain isolated.

4. Powered by GPT-5.1 Auto - Group chat responses run on GPT-5.1 Auto, which selects the best model based on the prompt and each user’s available capabilities. Rate limits only apply when ChatGPT sends a message rather than when humans participate. 

This update turns ChatGPT into a shared workspace instead of a single-user tool. It enables real-time collaboration for planning, writing, and decision-making with groups of up to 20 people. OpenAI signals that this is just the beginning of ChatGPT becoming a multi-person collaborative environment.

The Shift:

1. Smarter Visual Creation - Nano Banana Pro can turn ideas, sketches, handwritten notes, or data into detailed infographics and diagrams. It connects to Google Search to pull real-time information like recipes, weather, or sports. The model uses Gemini 3’s reasoning to generate context-rich and educational visuals.

2. Stronger Text and Languages - The model produces clearer, more accurate text directly inside images across multiple languages and fonts. It supports translation and localization for international content. Typography, long paragraphs, and expressive lettering render more reliably than before.

3. Higher Detail and Consistency - Nano Banana Pro blends up to 14 input images and keeps the identity of up to 5 people consistent in one scene, increasing output quality to 2K or 4K instead of 1024px.
