Perplexity launched a Plaid integration this week, letting users link bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and broking accounts directly inside the platform and ask free-form questions about their finances.

The Shift:

1. Banks It Connects - Through Plaid's network of 12,000+ financial institutions, including Chase, Fidelity, and Robinhood, users get a complete view of their money in one place. Access is read-only, and user data never touches Perplexity's servers.

2. What It Builds-  Perplexity Computer can build custom tools via simple text prompts, net worth dashboards, monthly budget trackers, debt payoff plans, retirement readiness calculators, and cash flow forecasts that update in real time.

3. Who Gets Access - It is live now on desktop for signed-in users in the US and Canada, with mobile and other countries to follow. Basic portfolio access is free, while advanced computer-powered features are exclusive to Pro and Max subscribers.

Perplexity is quietly building something much bigger than a search engine. This follows their US tax integration that fills out IRS forms autonomously, with crypto wallets and real estate still to come. Computer launched in February and already pushed ARR past $450M, a 50% jump in a single month.

🫀 Oxford Researchers Built an AI That Predicts Heart Failure Years Before It Happens

Researchers at the University of Oxford developed an AI tool that can predict heart failure up to five years in advance using routine cardiac CT scans, with 86% accuracy across more than 70,000 patients.

The Shift:

What does it detect? The AI reads textural changes in the fat surrounding the heart that signal inflammation in the muscle underneath. These changes are completely invisible to the human eye on any current medical imaging test.

How accurate is it? Trained on 70,000+ patients across nine NHS Trusts and followed up for a decade, the tool predicts five-year heart failure risk with 86% accuracy. Those flagged as highest risk were 20 times more likely to develop the condition than those flagged as safe.

What happens with the results? The tool produces an absolute risk score for each patient with no human input needed. Doctors can then use that score to decide how closely to monitor a patient and how aggressively to treat the conditions putting them at risk.

Where is it heading? The team is seeking regulatory approval to roll it out across NHS hospitals. Within months, they also plan to extend it beyond cardiac scans to work on any chest CT scan, including lung scans, catching even more at-risk patients opportunistically.

Over one million people in the UK currently live with heart failure. This tool does not treat the condition; it gives doctors a five-year head start to try to stop it from developing in the first place. That is a meaningful shift in how preventive cardiology could work.
