🤖 AI Bots Secretly Deployed on Reddit by University of Zurich

Researchers from the University of Zurich secretly ran an AI experiment on Reddit’s r/ChangeMyView community without approval. Using chatbots and data scraping, they impersonated real users to test how persuasive AI can be.

The Shift:

1. AI Bots Masqueraded as Real Users - The researchers deployed over 1,700 AI-generated comments into live Reddit debates. Some bots falsely claimed personal identities like trauma survivors or Black critics of BLM.

2. Personal Data Was Targeted for Manipulation - A separate AI scraped users' post histories to infer private details such as age, gender, and political views. Targeted bots were found to be six times more effective than human commenters.

3. Reddit Responds with Legal Action - Reddit’s Chief Legal Officer condemned the study as unethical and in violation of platform rules. The company has banned all known research-linked accounts and is pursuing legal action against the university and its researchers. An internal investigation has also been launched by the University of Zurich.

4. Moderators and Users Blindsided - Neither Reddit nor CMV moderators were notified in advance, a clear breach of ethical research standards. The CMV team has demanded an apology and asked that the research not be published. Users are being informed directly and encouraged to voice concerns.

This case exposes how AI can quietly infiltrate public discourse and manipulate people using false personas and private data. As AI becomes more advanced, the risk of unethical deployments like this grows.

🦙 Meta Unveils Major Llama Upgrades at First-Ever LlamaCon

At its inaugural LlamaCon, Meta rolled out a wave of tools and updates for developers building with Llama. From a new Llama API to enterprise-grade AI protections, the event positioned Llama as a cornerstone of open-source AI. It also celebrated 1B+ downloads and $1.5M in global grants.

The Shift:

1. Llama API Launches in Preview - Meta launched the Llama API in limited preview, offering one-click access and interactive playgrounds to explore the latest Llama 4 Scout and Maverick models. Developers can fine-tune, evaluate, and deploy custom Llama 3.3 models with ease. The SDK supports Python, TypeScript, and OpenAI compatibility for quick migration.

2. Enterprise-Ready Security Suite Debuts -  Meta introduced Llama Guard 4, LlamaFirewall, and Prompt Guard 2. These tools support content filtering, prompt safety, and model evaluation, all part of the new Llama Defenders Program. CyberSecEval 4 helps orgs benchmark AI performance in real-world security use cases.

3. Fast Inference & Stack Integrations Expand - Meta is partnering with Cerebras and Groq for faster inference and smoother prototyping. Developers can choose providers directly within the Llama API. New Llama Stack integrations with NVIDIA NeMo, IBM, Red Hat, and Dell enable turnkey enterprise deployments.

4. $1.5M in Impact Grants Awarded - Meta awarded $1.5M across 10 international recipients through the second Llama Impact Grants. Winners include civic service bots, rural offline AI tools, pharmacy assistants, and student-focused learning platforms. These reflect Llama’s growing use in social-good applications.

With Llama now integrated across apps, APIs, and developer tools, Meta is doubling down on an open, customizable AI future. The emphasis on portability, protection, and personalization gives Llama a competitive edge.
