The U.S. Department of Energy announced agreements with 24 organizations to advance the Genesis Mission, a large-scale effort to apply AI to scientific discovery. The initiative aligns with the Trump administration’s AI action plan and focuses on building a national AI infrastructure for research.

The Shift:
1. A 24-Partner AI Coalition - Genesis brings together frontier AI labs, cloud providers, chipmakers, and software firms, including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and AWS to collaborate directly with U.S. national laboratories.
The initiative connects 17 national labs and roughly 40,000 researchers, applying AI to automate experiments, accelerate simulations, and improve predictive modeling across energy, manufacturing, and scientific research.
2. Early Access to Frontier Models - Google DeepMind will grant early access to AlphaEvolve, AlphaGenome, and AI co-scientist tools, while OpenAI models are already running on Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Venado supercomputer.
AWS is committed to up to $50 billion in AI infrastructure, supported by partners like AMD, Intel, Oracle, Cerebras, and CoreWeave, with all Genesis outputs designed to remain architecture-agnostic.
Genesis represents a coordinated national bet on AI as core scientific infrastructure, not just a commercial tool. Luma and Google released updates that tackle two sides of AI video creation. Luma focused on tighter control over human performance and continuity, while Google expanded Gemini’s AI video verification. Available via Luma Dream Machine’s new model, Ray3 Modify is backed by a $900M funding round, with plans for a 2GW AI compute cluster in Saudi Arabia.

The Shift:
1. Luma Preserves Human Performance - Ray3 Modify lets creators transform existing footage using character reference images while retaining original motion, timing, eye line, and emotional delivery, enabling AI-assisted edits without sacrificing actor authenticity.
Creators can provide start and end frames to guide transitions, movements, and scene continuity, allowing controlled edits across costumes, identities, and performances without physical reshoots.
2. Gemini Expands AI Video Verification - Gemini can now determine whether a video was made or edited with Google AI by scanning for its SynthID watermark. The tool can point to specific timestamps where AI-generated visuals or audio appear.
Verification supports videos up to 90 seconds or 100MB and is available globally, but only applies to Google-generated content.
As AI video tools mature, scrutiny is increasing on both outputs and inputs. Adobe now faces a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging pirated books were used to train its SlimLM model via SlimPajama, derived from RedPajama and Books3, underscoring how provenance and training data transparency are becoming unavoidable issues alongside creative control.
